Top 10 Video Gaming Consoles of ALL-TIME
Console Name Year Released Comments Link
10. Sega Genesis 1989(US) Sega's Jump into the 16-bit console war. Amazing speed and very impressive graphics, especially in some of the later titles, made this one of the greatest consoles of all time.
9. NEO GEO 1990(US) SNK, a long time suported of Nintendo and Arcade game maker. Put its resources into an amazing 24-bit console. When it was released the NEO GEO had visual and audio effects that we far beyond the competition. The NEO GEO had strong support all the way up until 2003, with the release of Samurai Shodown 5!
8. GameCube 2001(US) Nintendo had its hands full with trying to return to its former greatness that it once had. The previous Console (N64) fell short of expectations. For the most part the GC improved on everything lacking with the N64. Allthough 3rd party support being lower and a lack of must have games 3 years after the console's release kept this console from greatness!
7. Atari 2600 1982(US) The first console to truly 'make it'. Fond memories of terrific games like Adventure, Joust and Donkey Kong make this console one of the most memorable of all time!!! The huge amount of crap games that wound up in landfills kept this from #1.
6. Sega Dreamcast 1999(US) Sega's amazing 128-bit console that destroyed all competition...for about 6months. Unfortunately Sega's need to sell out and kill off the DC WAY before it hit its prime has knocked this console out of my top 3. The console only lasted two years in the US, and Sega whored out a TON of the games that made the DC great to other consoles.....
5. Sony Playstation 2 2000(US) The most popular Console of all time rounds up the top 5. The PS2 is your BEST choice for the largest variety of video games. You name a genre and its got it covered. The only thing that this console hurt was the need to have a PS1. With 'full' backwards compatability the need for its older brother is gone... hopefully the PS3 launch doesn't hurt the PS2....
4. Nintendo NES 1985(US) The savior of the Video game crash of the mid eighties. One of the single greatest consoles of all time!! 8-bit at heart, but does some things that the next gen consoles wishes it could do! All of Nintendo's classic series' originated here- Metroid, Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior, Kid Icharis, and Zelda got their feet in the door to soon become video game legends!
3. Sega Saturn 1995(US) The 32-bit Console that fell behind the PS1 and N64 in sales in the US, was one of the best selling consoles over seas. Matter of FACT the Saturn was the #1 selling Sega Console in Japan!(Crushing the Dreamcast and Genesis) The Import industry is HUGE for the Saturn, and an awesome number of class titles from Sega America make this a HARD console to pass up. King of Fighters series, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Magic Knight Reyearth and Saturn Bomberman are some of the consoles greatest titles.
2. Nintendo SNES 1991(US) This is Nintendo's greatest console of all time! This was a coin toss between this one and #1. The main reason why the SNES was halted before taking over the #1 spot in my world, is because of the exclusive titles that made the SNES the greatest console in the universe have been ported to Nintendo's handheld market. Or other companies took the SNES classics and put them on other consoles. IE- Super Mario World(GBA), Final Fantasy III(VI Jap) (PS1), Ogre Battle(PS1), and Donkey Kong Country(GBA) :among others.
1. NEC Turbo Duo 1989/1992(US) The PC Engine had been released in Japan in 1987. Two years later the TurboGrafx-16 was unleashed in the US.. and while selling pretty well, the TG16 fell into third place in the 16-bit wars, behind the Genesis and SNES. In Japan the PCEngine was neck n' neck with Nintendo's 16-bit console for video game supremacy. By 1992, NEC released an amazing comsole (Turbo DUO) that allowed players to play TG16 carts, TGCD, and Turbo Super CD games. The Duo covered many generations of gameplay. Some games were comparable to the NES, and some were just as impressive as NEO GEO! It enjoyed a healthy lifespan in japan, from 1987-1996. In the US it was sold from 1989 to 1994. While the US sales were somewhat dissapointing, the real heart of this beast comes from importing! Japan saw the most amazing library of classic games, from Dracula X, to Ys IV. Over 1,000 titles are avalable! Support for this console is nearly endless, and will keep any collector busy for a life time.
